If Every Brokerage Has Great Technology, Why Do Agents Still Move?
Summary
This post explores whether technology is still a deciding factor when agents choose a brokerage. While most modern brokerages offer strong technology platforms, the article argues that leadership, accessibility, accountability, strategy, and growth opportunities have become the true differentiators. It encourages agents to look beyond tools and consider the environment, people, and support systems that will help shape the next chapter of their career.
Technology has become one of the most common recruiting tools in real estate. Every brokerage has a CRM, marketing platform, transaction management system, AI tools, websites, automations, and enough logins to make your head spin. As someone who genuinely loves technology, I get it. At Avanti Way, we’re constantly evaluating and creating new tools, as well as looking for ways to help agents work smarter and serve their customers better.
But after years of recruiting, leading offices, and having conversations with agents who are considering a move, I’ve realized that technology is rarely the reason someone changes brokerages.
Sure, technology may get someone’s attention. It may even get them in the door. But most agents don’t wake up one morning and decide to move because another brokerage has a different CRM or a slightly better marketing platform. The reality is that most brokerages today have good technology. The gap between one tech stack and another is much smaller than it used to be.
What agents are really evaluating is whether the environment can help them grow.
They want to know if leadership is accessible. They want to know if someone will challenge them when they’re stuck, help them think strategically, and be invested in their success. They want to know if they’re joining a place where they will be seen as a professional with goals and ambitions, not simply another agent in the roster.
That’s the part of recruiting that has become most interesting to me. The conversation has shifted from features to people. From software to relationships. From tools to leadership.
The right environment is what creates growth.
When agents choose to align themselves with a brokerage, they’re making a much bigger decision than selecting a technology platform. They’re choosing the people who will influence their business, challenge their thinking, and help shape the next chapter of their career.
That’s why I believe the most important question isn’t, “What technology do you offer?”
It’s, “Who will I become if I join your office?”
